On the border between Morocco and the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta, since 2004, the commercial center of El Biutz is an unusual custom, without trucks nor containers. Every day, thousands of divorced, repudiated or partially disabled Moroccan women bring all kind of goods from Europe to Africa: they are called porteadoras or mujeresmulas (‘mule women’). They earn some 5 Euro per trip, still contributing to create a business of 700 millions of Euro per year. A kind of legalized smuggling market, which takes advantage of the absence of taxes on the border of Ceuta.
